Client Environment :
Our client had complex, multi-platform system management needs. Tivoli Enterprise Software was chosen to streamline the monitoring tasks and procedures required to maintain and improve IT systems. Client had different OS platforms and RDBMS versions running mission critical business applications. Tivoli management system was comprised of Sun Solaris, HP-UX and Wintel servers.
Software used to manage Tivoli setup were Tivoli framework 3.7, Tivoli Distributed Monitoring 3.7, Tivoli enterprise console 3.7.1,Tivoli console UI Server 3.7.1, Tivoli manager for MS-SQL server 1.3 and Tivoli manager for oracle 2.0 with all the latest patches.
|
Client requirement :
Optimize usage of Tivoli software to deliver reliable monitoring system for the data center.
|
Our Solution :
We analyzed the client requirement and discrepancies in current Tivoli setup and planned the project in phases.
Tivoli setup was first replicated in the control environment and was tested for various Profiles, Monitors, and Tivoli database rules. Rigorous testing was done over one complete month and all requirements were checked.

On production setup, all profiles for different applications, servers were recreated or modified. Redundant profiles were deleted. On TEC console side, users were grouped by department and each department was assigned TEC console views as per their requirements. Existing TEC_RULES were corrected and new rules were added to improve the co-relation of the events, execution of task depending on the events, audio alerts, escalations by sending SMS, email notifications and popup menus.
Redundant objects accumulated over two years were resulting in Tivoli database file to grow fast. These were removed with the help of Tivoli support. Purging scripts were implemented to delete old Tivoli events.
This cleanup improved performance of Tivoli. User problems related to slow startup of TEC console, time required for updates in the status of events on console, workstations getting hung because of high memory utilization by Tivoli JRE process were resolved. |
Customized scripts were written for monitoring through Tivoli weblogic, NDM, Netscape applications which were not monitored earlier.
Weekly Tivoli database backups were configured and scheduled for resolving issues related to unreferenced objects, deletion of endpoints and corruption of database files.
Web-based weekly and daily reports were generated for reviewing to maximize the throughput of systems.
